A federal grand jury added on Thursday a charge — drug trafficking that results in a death — to the list of charges against a McKees Rocks man who entered the country illegally.
Saul Lopes-Viera, 24, of Mexico, has pleaded guilty to illegal entry, but is awaiting trial on three heroin-trafficking charges, which carry a maximum sentence of 20 years. The charge of drug trafficking that results in a death carries a sentence of 20 years to life.
The superseding indictment added another drug charge because an investigation by the Drug Enforcement Administration and Canonsburg police turned up a person who died as a result of the heroin ring tied to Lopes-Viera, according to court documents. The indictment doesn’t name the person who died.
