Trevino wins $1 million with hole-in-one
GAYLORD, Mich. — Lee Trevino holed a $1 million shot in the Par-3 Shootout on Monday, acing the 138-yard seventh hole in the two-day skins competition.
The hole, nicknamed ”High Five,” includes a 90-foot vertical drop that makes club selection a bit tricky. Trevino decided on a pitching wedge, but thought he’d hit it too hard. The ball sailed directly at the flag, landed pin high about a foot onto the fringe and spun back, rolling 20 feet into the cup.
The shot, Trevino’s fifth hole-in-one in competition, was worth $500,000 to Trevino and $500,000 to the St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital in Memphis.
Penn State landed its fourth recruit from the Class of 2002 when Chris Auletta of St. Anthony’s High School in Melville, N.Y., committed to the Nittany Lions, BlueWhite Illustrated reported Monday. Auletta, a 6-foot-6, 320-pound offensive lineman, was a first-team all-state selection as a junior.
The Buffalo Sabres agreed to terms with forward Chris Taylor on a multiyear contract yesterday. The 29-year-old center played in 24 games with Buffalo the past two seasons, recording one goal and three assists.
Former Dallas Cowboys receiver Michael Irvin might not stand trial on a drug charge because of problems in the case, his lawyer said. At his arraignment Monday, Irvin pleaded innocent to a felony charge of possessing less than a gram of cocaine. If convicted, hen could face six months to two years in jail and up to a $10,000 fine.
Tim Henman beat Paradorn Srichaphan 6-3, 6-3 yesterday in the Tennis Masters Series-Canada. Defending champion Marat Safin , seeded second, retired in the second set of his match against Nicolas Escude , apparently because of a knee injury. Safin was down 4-6, 2-5.

Soccer fans battled police and each other after the Bundesliga game between St. Pauli and Hertha Berlin, leaving two policemen injured. Five people were arrested following Sunday’s game and 17 others were detained and later released. The fighting came after the opening game of the season for the teams ended in a scoreless tie.
