Can't explain how this product works. But I'm impressed by how well it does.

The Mr. Clean Magic Eraser Extra Power has the innocent appearance of a regular white kitchen sponge. Wet it, squeeze out the excess water, and it makes short work of removing black heel marks from my laminated wood floors, the accumulated dust and grime from baseboards, blackened rings of dirt around kitchen-cabinet knobs and the coffee splatters from the wall next to the dishwasher.

What's best is that it works without additional cleaning products, and the nearly dry sponge doesn't leave drip marks on vertical surfaces.

The only disappointment was its inability to deal with the sticky buildup of grease on my painted wooden range hood. While it did remove some of the recent surface grime, dragging the sponge over the tacky goo ended up shredding the sponge.

Nevertheless, I'm stocking up on these for quick pre-guest, once-overs on bathroom and kitchen surfaces.

With plenty of grime to take care of in different places of my kitchen and bathroom, Mr. Clean Magic Eraser wasn't going to have it easy. I have to say, I'm a surface cleaner, and everything might look good at first impression, but you don't want to look any closer. So, I was going to that deeper territory with this cleaning product.

I must admit, when I took the cleaning pad out of the box, it didn't look like much. An ultra-thick paper towel was my first impression. Following the instructions on the box, I went to work.

The Mr. Clean Magic Eraser was tougher than it looked. The flexibility of the product, balanced with its hard-nosed scrubbing powers, enabled me to reach and clean some tough spots in my kitchen and bath. Also notable was its ability to take care of different surfaces. With a little elbow grease, I was able to give my space an impressive work over.

I also should mention that I saved a dirty area for the next day to test the durability of the Mr. Clean Magic Eraser. Again, I went through the process of getting the product ready, and it handled its second chore gracefully. All clean and very impressive.

I would recommend the Mr. Clean Magic Eraser to anyone. It's a tough product, and, most importantly, it's very easy to use.

Mr. Clean Magic Eraser Extra Power falls into the category of "new and improved" products that purport to be 50-percent stronger than the regular version. I've never tried the original, so the Extra Power had to prove its worth on its own.

A good deal of dirt that's settled in our home during a several month-long kitchen-renovation project provided the chance to see whether Mr. Clean was up for some heavy-duty cleaning.

While the sponges did a nice job acting like a "dirt magnet" on smooth surfaces such as granite, porcelain tile and appliances, it fell short when it came time to scrub grime from light-colored grout. The grout's rough surface tended to make the sponge fall apart at the edges and did a less-satisfactory job than our old standby -- a hard-plastic brush and a paste made from powdered cleanser. Even "extra whitening" toothpaste applied to grout lines with a brush seemed to do a better job than the sponges.

At a cost of $2 to $3 for a box of two, the sponges might end up in our grocery cart to speed basic cleaning jobs. But we'll probably stick to tried-and-true methods when faced with really tough cleaning chores.
