Not all granola bars are created equal. Some weigh in anywhere from 80 to 400 calories and can contain as much fat as a Hagen-Daz ice cream bar. It’s good to know that Quaker Chewy Granola Bars with Protein come in near the mid-to-low range with only 110 calories, 3 grams of fat, no trans fats or cholesterol, and 5 grams of protein — about 10 percent of a recommended daily intake. All that accounting puts it in the ballpark as a potential snack that’s relatively harmless and a convenient, quick, emergency alternative to carry in your backpack or handbag. The bars have a nice crunch, but when it comes to flavor, they’re on the subtle side. Peanut Butter & Chocolate is studded with nuggets of chocolate that provide bursts of flavor, but overall, there’s more evidence of oats and rice than peanut butter. Nutty Peanut Butter offered greater peanut-y flavor. But if you choose to give it a try, don’t completely remove it from its wrapper. You don’t want to find yourself out on the trail or in the mall with sticky fingers.

For years, my family has bugged me because of my nonchalance when it comes to getting in three square meals a day. Breakfast might be the most important meal of the day, but it never found a way into my diet — unless you consider a grande Starbucks breakfast. So the Quaker Chewy Granola Bars with Protein sound like the perfect solution to my problem. Quick, easy to grab on the go, and best yet, they promise the energy boost I always rely on coffee for. With 110 calories and 3 grams of fat per bar, they’re not as low-fat as previous Quaker offerings, but they just might do the trick. When it comes to taste, the Peanut Butter & Chocolate variety hit the spot. However, the Nutty Peanut Butter left an odd taste in my mouth. Normally a nut fan, I was surprised at the overwhelming peanut taste. I’d definitely enjoy the Peanut Butter & Chocolate bars again, but the Nutty Peanut Butter bars will not find a place in my snack food drawers.

As someone who is hypoglycemic and needs more protein and fewer carbs, I was pleased by the description of these Granola bars, which usually are more healthful than pure sweets but still heavy on carbs. Having a shot of protein makes it even more nutritious, and I’m much more likely to buy these than I would other Granola bars or other snack bars, because a snack like this will help keep my blood sugar stable. I tried both flavors — the Peanut Butter & Chocolate and Nutty Peanut Butter — and both tasted great.
