Trib tested: Takeya Classic Glass Water Bottle

I have travel mugs, water bottles and thermoses, but the fact that none of them is dishwasher-friendly always has been a pain. Enter Takeya. Now, if I decide I want to take apple cider or orange juice or chai tea one day, there is no lingering aftertaste on the next day's water.

The bottle fits a little loosely in my car's cup holder, so I'm glad for the silicon jacket that not only keeps it from slipping from my grasp and protects my hands from hot or cold beverages, but also keeps it quiet when it wobbles a little bit. But if it should fall over, the lid doesn't leak (unlike almost every travel mug or water bottle I own). I am careful in using warm beverages, but nothing scalding hot, in it. While I think the glass could take it, I don't think my hands could, even with the jacket.

Takeya water bottles have the sleek form and contour of museum pieces. They look more suited for display than use. But there's nothing wrong with having a pragmatic flair. Made of glass, encased in a silicone sleeve, the bottle helps water stay cold longer. Because the bottle is glass, there's no plastic or metal taste, as Takeya claims.

The heft of the bottle -- the one I tried holds 22 fluid ounces -- is, for a lack of a better word, reassuring. This isn't a fragile vessel. The one design flaw is the cap is not attached to the bottle; this could be a bit troublesome while walking or driving.

A glass water bottle• I was skeptical at first. But one drink from this sturdy vessel had me hooked. Just as we prefer to drink wine from a quality wine glass rather than a plastic cup, or savor a craft beer from a Pilsner glass over an aluminum can, I swear, the water tastes fresher, cooler and more refreshing when drinking from this glass bottle.

The silicon jacket offers a slip-proof grip, as well as a space for condensation to gather. I felt comfortable standing it in the corner of the gym during exercise class. Even when it was knocked over, there were no spills or shattering. The best part is the bottle and jacket -- it's supple enough to remove -- can go in the dishwasher for cleaning.
