In our house, we don’t turn the lights off at bedtime if there’s anything in the sink. Not one cup, not one fork. That means we spend a lot of time at the sink because our kids don’t know the meaning of using just one cup or one plate. A reliable dishwashing soap usually eases our daily battle. We’ve stuck to the better-known brands such as Dawn and Palmolive. The cheaper brands tend to be runny and smelly. Which is where the new Gain dishwashing liquid comes in. It is by no means runny, but the “original scent” comes with a distinct smell. It is not unpleasant, but sort of flowery and, dare we say, laundry-ish. My wife said she didn’t like the idea of doing dishes with a soap brand better known as a laundry detergent. Would you ever do dishes with something named Tide• she asked me. I guess the answer is no, even if at the end of the day, the dishes were perfectly clean.

I’ve never been a dishwashing liquid connoisseur. Usually, I just grab the cheapest one available, throw it under my sink and use it whenever I run out of dishes. You shouldn’t put much stock in a bachelor’s opinion on dishwashing liquids, but let this be an exception. That’s because Ultra Gain’s new aroma dishwashing liquids are that good. And this is coming from someone who could care less about dishwashing liquids.

The thing about Ultra Gain that impressed me the most was its endurance. As usual, I had a stack of dirty dishes that needed done, so I thought I’d put Gain to the test. With regular dishwashing liquids, the bubbles disappear quickly, and I’m usually left with dirty water after a few pots and a couple of plates. Gain stayed strong up until the last fork. Also, the aroma still was apparent when I was done; that was a nice surprise. And it left my kitchen smelling nice.

I would recommend Ultra Gain. The liquid’s endurance was fantastic, and that makes it OK in my book. I dread doing dishes, even when I’m using a dishwasher, but Ultra Gain, with its fantastic smell, makes it tolerable.

I have used Gain laundry detergent for many years, mostly because of the delicious smells. Plenty of detergents clean just as well, I’m sure, but I’m a scent-a-holic and love the fruity smells. For the same reasons, I love the Ultra Gain Dishwashing Liquid. It is a treat to dunk my dishes in a bath scented with Apple Mango Tango fragrance. And it cleans well, too. Lately, I’ve had a problem with residue in my dishwasher — but when I washed a coated tumbler with Gain, it came out clear.
