Workers continued late Wednesday to use a backhoe to help clean up tens of thousands of pounds of frozen chicken that burned when a tractor-trailer caught fire Wednesday afternoon along the Pennsylvania Turnpike in Plum, state police said.

There were no injuries in the fire, which was reported at 4:11 p.m. and was confined to the trailer, a trooper said, adding, “It's a mess out there.”

The rig was traveling east in the right lane of the pike, troopers said. The fire occurred at or near the point where the pike narrows from three lanes to two lanes, troopers said.

At one point, eastbound traffic was back up for two miles in the area, troopers said. The right lane remained closed more than six hours after the fire erupted and there was no indication when it would reopen, troopers said.
