Twins to play key role for Fox Chapel volleyball
Desirae and Dominique Buccigrossi, rising seniors on the Fox Chapel girls volleyball team, are confident their final high school season will include an appearance in the WPIAL playoffs.
The twins, better known as Dez and Dom, have been playing volleyball since sixth grade. They are optimistic the playoffs are an attainable goal.
“We lost a lot of talented seniors,” Dom said. “They'll be missed, but we have a lot of good players coming back, and we've been working hard. We have a good outlook and a good coach.”
Des agreed, saying: “We've been playing club volleyball together. We know that with last year's seniors gone, this is our time to step up. The entire team knows we have to work together. We're confident in each other, and we have set a goal of making the playoffs. It's a priority.”
Fox Chapel coach Sarah Kirsch is glad to have the sisters back for one more year.
“They are great leaders,” she said. “They both bring an intensity to the floor that will be necessary for our young team to succeed this year. I have loved every minute of coaching them throughout their years. They have a great attitude and their parents have clearly instilled a great work ethic and accountability in them.
“They came into the program willing to work hard and were very coachable. Des is one of the best natural defenseman I have ever coached. Dom also excels in defense but will be transitioning this year into setting because our team needs a setter, which shows her selfless team-centered personality.”
Both girls will attend the Dayton after graduation but most likely won't be playing volleyball.
“We'll both be going to the same school,” Dom said. “Our main focus will be on academics.”
“Playing on a club team or an intramural team may be an option,” Des said. “Right now, the focus is on the upcoming season. We play club volleyball three times a week, and soon we'll be participating in open gym. We're looking forward to a successful season.”
