Two people were caught on camera stealing copper from the Southmoreland Elementary School construction site earlier this week and charged Wednesday before District Judge Roger Eckels of Norvelt with burglary, criminal conspiracy, two counts of theft and two counts of receiving stolen property.

According to an affidavit, at approximately 10 p.m. Monday, Kelly Snyder, 36, of 378 Everson Valley Road, Everson, and her boyfriend, Scott Smith, 37, of 611 Scottdale Ave., Scottdale, entered the construction site along Chestnut Street and stole various lengths of copper wire valued at $500, belonging to A-1 Electrical Inc., two large garbage cans and a smaller metal garbage can valued at $105, belonging to the Southmoreland school district.

A Trail Camera, which is a digital motion-activated camera, had been installed on the site because of copper being stolen from that area on two occasions.

Scottdale police investigated on Tuesday, obtaining a search warrant, and arrived at Smith's residence where police said they discovered the missing items.

During the investigation, police reported Snyder confessed that she and Smith committed the crime. A preliminary hearing for Snyder and Smith has yet to be announced.
