Two Fox Chapel teachers resign over trip allegations

Tawnya Panizzi

Two Fox Chapel Area School District teachers have resigned as a result of allegations that they allowed students to drink alcohol during a trip abroad in July.

Three high school teachers were suspended without pay earlier after Superintendent Alan Fager learned of the allegations.

One of the three was placed on administrative leave for the remainder of the school year after a meeting Tuesday between district Solicitor Tim Sheerer and Ron Frank, president of the teachers union.

The district is not expected to take any further action against Bill Adamsky and John Hicks, both English teachers, and Timothy Brennan, a Spanish teacher.

Neither Sheerer or Frank would say which teachers resigned.

The trio chaperoned a summer trip to England that was not school-sponsored. The group was part of a tour organized by the National Educational Travel Council. A dozen students, some of whom graduated in 2000, traveled nine days in England.

The legal drinking age in England is 18. The ages of students who participated in the trip were not released.

Although the district administration has declined comment on most details, Sheerer said the decision was made because the students and teachers were brought together as a result of the school.

Sheerer said one teacher retained his position because of a distinction in terms of information the administration received.

Fager and Frank declined comment.

Attorney Dan Scannell of the Pennsylvania State Educators Association represented the teachers. He could not be reached for comment.

Jodie Daubert, spokeswoman for the Pennsylvania Department of Education, could not comment on whether or not a complaint was filed.

The teachers have the right to appeal any decision made by the school board to the state Department of Education.

The school board will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Dorseyville Middle School.
