U-Haul is fighting to keep its large sign near an Atlanta-area highway. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports the sign, near U.S. 78 in the subdivision of Snellville, is 35 feet high with a total of 275 square feet of area. That’s about twice the square-footage and 15 feet more in height than new zoning regulations allow. U-Haul’s sign was grandfathered in because it was standing before the new law took effect. But the sign now has to be moved 5 feet to make way for a road-widening project and that means it’s not covered. The company has asked the Gwinnett County Zoning Board of Appeals for a variance. Members of the Rivermist Homeowners Association have been lobbying hard against any exception to the sign law, arguing that a variance would open the door for other super-sized signs and sabotage efforts to beautify the area. © Copyright 2005 by United Press International
