Three new members of the security team were introduced at U.N. World Headquarters Friday, "sniffer" dogs Candy, Jet and Scout.

Chief spokesman Fred Eckhard introduced the dogs and their handlers, officers of headquarters' Safety and Security Service.

He explained that over the past few years explosive-sniffing dogs at headquarters were contracted from a private company at considerable expense, becoming known lightly as "assistant secretary-general dogs" in view of their cost, close to the salary at that level.

Eckhard said the U.S. Mission to the United Nations and New York State Police teamed to help the U.N. service to eventually get eight bomb-sniffing dogs.

He said ownership will cost much less than half of the $360,000 paid yearly to the private contractor to provide only two dogs and handlers.
