The latest U.N. report on Sudan's embattled Darfur region says there has been no improvement during the past month.
A monthly report from U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan to the Security Council said clashes between the government and rebel forces continue. The Monday report also said there were attacks against international aid workers, rape and the persecution of victims, abuse of children and torture by security forces.
"The killing of civilians and combatants alike must stop and a genuine ceasefire must be observed," Annan said. He called on all parties to abide by several agreements they have already signed and urged the international community to "take urgent action" to assist and strengthen the African Union Mission in Sudan.
Known by the acronym AMIS the mission numbers some 2,260 troops of a mandated total of about 3,160 to monitor the situation in an area the size of France.
