The United Nations Monday welcomed the appointment of U.S. Undersecretary of State John Bolton as new U.S. ambassador to the world organization.
"We look forward to working with him ... and we will welcome him at a time when we are in the midst of major reform," U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan said.
U.S. President George W. Bush made the appointment Monday during the U.S. Senate recess despite some Senate opposition, and in time for opening of the U.N. General Assembly session in September.
Bolton pledged to work for a stronger, more effective United Nations.
Annan said, "I think it is alright for one ambassador to come in and push but ... to always remember that there are 190 ambassadors who will have to become convinced ... so that if one comes with that spirit, that spirit of give and take ... that ambassador will succeed."
