The United States has deported to Mexico a man charged with killing a woman in the Mexican border city of Ciudad Juarez.

The Mexican justice department said the alleged killer, Jaime Jones Arellano, was able to evade justice for longer than three years after fleeing to the United States, where he subsequently was sentenced to a prison term for illegally entering the country.

Arellano is accused of slaying María Julia Luna Vera in April 2001.

A Mexican judge issued an arrest warrant for Jones Arellano in November 2001.
