The federal government filed a civil lawsuit Wednesday in Pittsburgh seeking to recover triple damages and interest from a former supervisory operations clerk convicted of stealing about $11,900 from the Department of Veterans Affairs.

Kristen Franc of Pleasant Grove, Ala., pleaded guilty in 2009 to falsifying 98 canteen service refund vouchers between April 2006 and May 2007 while she worked for the VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System. U.S. District Judge Terrence McVerry sentenced Franc in April 2009 to five years of probation and ordered her to pay full restitution.

Franc’s plea agreement with the government allows it to seek civil penalties against her for the thefts.
