KUWAIT CITY, Kuwait - A U.S. military-chartered airplane carrying American troops skidded off the runway Saturday at Kuwait International Airport, but there were no casualties, a U.S. army spokeswoman said.

Airport sources said the plane may have skidded due to rain on the runway.

"I can confirm that there are no injuries," Major Amanda Azubuike told Reuters, adding that the McDonnell Douglas MD 11 sustained damage and the incident was being investigated.

She said there were U.S. soldiers aboard the flight but did not give a number.

Zuhayr al-Zamil, deputy head of Kuwait's civil aviation, was quoted by state news agency KUNA as saying there were 210 passengers on board but did not specify if they were military or not.

He said air traffic had resumed after a temporary closure of the airport.
