U.S. Steel Corp.'s chief executive now owns a $2 million stake in the Pittsburgh Penguins, team representatives said on Thursday.
John P. Surma is "a pillar in the Pittsburgh community, and a longstanding supporter of the Penguins," said Travis Williams, the team's chief operating officer and general counsel. "He has a great affinity for hockey, and he's not a bad hockey player himself."
Surma, who plays in a recreational league, began talking with the team last year about making an investment, Williams said. A securities filing this week said an investor in Lemieux Group LP acquired $2 million in equity, with $27 million remaining to be sold.
The $29 million equity total was set last year, and gave the team flexibility to take on other investors, Williams said, but no additional investors are being sought.
In addition to Mario Lemieux and Ron Burkle, the Penguins have 21 other investors, he said. Downtown-based U.S. Steel referred calls yesterday to the Penguins.
