The fundamental basis of a free and just society is the free acquirement, protection and utilization of private property. In order for one to be truly free and thus not oppressed, the right to execute the management of this private property must fall squarely on the individual. That stated, it is the function of the law to protect and otherwise uphold this fundamental right so dear and imperative for a free society. For the law to act outside this limitation is to violate the foundation of the law itself, making the law’s application of justice tainted as legal plunder. This concept, of course, was put forth in the 19th century by the French legal philosopher Frederic Bastiat. It is therefore no surprise that the Uniform Construction Code is a clear violation of our basic right to private property. For an individual to be restricted from his right to the utilization of private property is a vain and most disdainful perversion of the just application of the law. What will the government do next⢠Tell us what color our houses should be⢠Or perhaps how big or small they must be?! Or whether we can own property at all, I dare say! Christopher Watson Penn Township
