We are deeply distressed by the harassment and violence targeted at Arab-Americans, Muslims and others based on their ethnicity or religion. We wish to extend our support, friendship and good will to our brothers and sisters of the Islamic and Arab-American communities.

In this time of heightened emotions, we are painfully aware that some among us react with hateful words and deeds against innocent people who themselves are grieving over the massive loss of lives. We deplore these racist, nationalistic accusations and actions. We urge our fellow citizens not to surrender to hysterical ethnic intimidation in their frustration and grief.

These are not expressions of patriotism, but rather of the 'ugly American.'
