Uniontown Hospital details expansion

Officials of The Uniontown Hospital announced Wednesday that they have approved expansion plans totaling $3.2 million to accommodate an increased need for services.

Two of the bigger projects involve the development of new outpatient centers, including a diagnostic center in the Fayette County Business Park in South Union Township, which will provide laboratory services, X-rays and ultrasound tests.

Digital mammography equipment also will be available at the diagnostic center, which officials expect to be open by early summer.

Another outpatient service -- a diabetes center -- will be offered at the medical pavilion along Woodlawn Avenue in Uniontown. That center is slated for a late-spring or early-summer opening.

"As the primary source of health-care services in Fayette County, we must keep pace with changing patient needs and rapidly changing technological advances," said Paul Bacharach, chief executive officer and president of the hospital. "This requires providing a comprehensive range of conveniently located services available for our community members and their families."

Hospital officials also said the sleep disorders center will double in size to include four beds. That center, which is staffed by a pulmonologist, is expected to be expanded early this summer.

Meanwhile, an old medical office near the emergency department on the hospital's Uniontown campus will be razed this spring to make space for future expansions.

The Uniontown Hospital has been in operation since 1904.
