Uniontown City Council is moving forward with the establishment of an annual inspection fee for landlords.

An amendment to establish the fee was approved in October and presented for a first read Wednesday.

The city's Regulated Rental Unit Occupancy Ordinance will set the annual inspection fee at $50 for two to four rental units and $15 for each additional unit. Single units will be charged a $15 fee.

Licenses must be renewed on or before June 30 each year.

The city is required to have two readings of an amendment before it becomes law. After next month's reading, council can then hold a final vote for it to go into effect Jan. 1, 2008.

The 28-page rental ordinance lists owners' duties, occupants' duties, information on licenses and inspection, grounds for non-renewal or suspension or revocation of licenses, violations and penalties, and other provisions.

Landlords had expressed opposition and requested council either vote against the ordinance or table the vote to give those opposed extra time to understand the ordinance, which they said makes landlords responsible for policing their tenants. They also complained of privacy issues.
