A resolution to prohibit children from playing in the streets and on the sidewalks of Uniontown was introduced by council Wednesday after many complaints from residents.

The proposed ordinance prohibits "the playing of games on city highways, streets, alleys, sidewalks and thoroughfares."

Councilman Marlin Sprouts Jr., Blair Jones and Gary Crozier voted in favor of the ordinance, while Councilman Frances Palumbo voted against it. Council intends to adopt the ordinance at its next regular meeting on Dec. 2.

Jones, who proposed the ordinance, said the ordinance is geared to protect children, who have designated places to play in the city.

"We have playgrounds in the city, and we're moving for better playgrounds in the city," Jones said.

Sprouts agreed with Jones, stating that while driving, he has encountered children playing in the middle of the street and in the path of his vehicle.

"I had to wait until they let me through," Sprouts said, adding that children still have front and back yards in which to play and they should remember that the streets and sidewalks were never meant to be playgrounds.

Uniontown Mayor Ed Fike, who abstained from voting, said he agreed with Jones and Sprouts.
