Warner Brothers and director Bryan Singer officially announced Friday that actor Brian Routh will play Superman in a still untitled movie scheduled to be shot next year in Australia.

Routh was unknown until earlier this week when a Website, LatinoReview.com, broke the story of his casting.

Routh has had small guest roles in a number of television shows and a brief part in the daytime soap opera One Life to Live. He also appears in a supporting part in a thriller, Deadly, to be released next year.

E!Online reports that Routh shares much with Christopher Reeve, the best-known wearer of the Superman cape. Both were cast as young unknowns with little experience in film, although Reeve had been involved with regional theater from childhood.

Singer is reportedly considering a list of six actresses for the role of Lois Lane.
