Health giant University of Pittsburgh Medical Center hired a longtime IBM executive as its chief communications officer, officials told employees

Thursday. Andrea V. Cotter, who worked for IBM more than 30 years, will join UPMC's executive staff Jan. 31. Cotter worked in various sales and marketing divisions and most recently was director of global healthcare marketing. Cotter will be responsible for national, regional and clinical marketing, advertising and public relations.

She replaces Sandra N. Danoff, the chief communications officer since 2005. Danoff will remain at UPMC with the new position of senior vice president, strategic planning and special projects.

"Andrea Cotter is a seasoned marketing professional with a deep understanding of the healthcare marketplace," said UPMC President Jeffrey Romoff.
