UPMC Health Plan has signed on as a presenting sponsor of the Pittsburgh Half Marathon, joining Dick's Sporting Goods as title sponsor of the Pittsburgh Marathon and FedEx Ground as sponsor of the Marathon Relay.

The race is scheduled for May 2, 2010.

"We're absolutely thrilled," race director Patrice Matamoros said Tuesday. "It's the perfect partner for us because of their focus on health and wellness. They recognize a vital role they could play in our weekend of events."

Last year was the 20th running of the marathon but the first since 2003.

A total of 3,439 runners finished the marathon last May with an average time of 4:15:55, in addition to 4,107 half-marathon finishers and 484 relay teams, according to results on active.com, for a record total field of 9,482 runners and walkers.

Combined registration for all three events for 2010 is currently over 2,900. Registration at this time last year was 600.

"It wasn't until March last year that we had 3,000 so we're hopeful this is an indicator of a successful future," Matamoros said.

Runners who register at Pittsburghmarathon.com before midnight Nov. 28 will receive $5 off their entry fee, and the first 5,000 who register will receive a personalized bib.
