Utah bill would set evolution disclaimer

A bill to require Utah science teachers to tell students some scientists reject evolution has support, and opposition, from both Republicans and Democrats.

Senate Bill 96 passed the state Senate 16-12. But its fate in the House is uncertain, the New York Times reported.

State Rep. Stephen Urquhart, the majority whip, has already said that instead of rounding up Republican support for the measure he will vote against it.

Urquhart believes the bill undermines religion as well as science. But Rep. James A. Ferrin, the bill's Republican sponsor in the House, says the measure is "not about belief, it's about not overstepping what we know."

On the other hand, the Republican Majority Leader in the Senate, Peter Knudson, says "Of course, it's about religion.

In Utah, an overwhelming majority of elected officials are members of the Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter-Day Saints.
