The large American flag on Water Street in Belle Vernon is no longer flying due to the work of a vandal.

Southwest Regional police Chief John Hartman said someone broke the spotlight that illuminates the flag, which is visible to motorists as they cross the Speers bridge on Interstate 70.

The flag was donated to the borough by Maccabee Industrial Inc. and was erected on their property at 113 Water St.

Hartman said the flag will not be flying until the spotlight is repaired due to federal regulations that the flag must be illuminated if displayed during periods of darkness.
