Vanderbilt officials approved a 2007 budget without a tax increase Tuesday. The balanced $115,624 budget keeps the property tax rate at 1.040 mills, which has remained unchanged since the early 1970s. The budget anticipates $7,000 from real estate taxes. Each mill generates $6,730. The largest source of tax income is $22,000 in wage taxes. Other taxes and fees bring the total anticipated revenue to $43,260. The borough anticipates carrying over $72,364 from the 2006 fiscal year. Expenses in the budget total $40,955. The largest expense is $13,000 for insurance, followed by $8,055 for street lighting and $5,970 for the secretary's salary. The budget includes $1,440 for code enforcement, although the borough does not have a code enforcement officer following the resignation of Rich Keffer. The borough is taking applications for an experienced code enforcement officer. Resumes are due Jan. 9, with an officer likely to be hired at the Jan. 16 meeting. Send resumes to Vanderbilt Borough, P.O. Box 475, Vanderbilt, PA 15486. Mayor Joseph Ambrose said an illegal tire dump will be an early order of business for the new code enforcement officer. Councilwoman Jennifer Sigado said all-terrain vehicles remain a continual problem. "I caught two more kids on quads this week," she said.
