Technicians repaired a problem that prevented Verizon landline telephone customers in West Mifflin, Duquesne and McKeesport from calling 911 for a few hours Thursday morning.
Circuits from a Verizon network facility in West Mifflin that directly connects to the Allegheny County 911 Center failed about 1:15 a.m., Verizon spokesman Lee Gierczynski said. The failure prevented customers who use a landline phone from reaching 911, but other phone service was not affected and wireless customers could reach the center, Gierczynski said.
Technicians restored the connection about 8 a.m., he said. Workers continue to monitor the network facility and Verizon will investigate what caused the problem, he said.
