The Pennsylvania NanoMaterials Commercialization Center is providing HydroGen Corp. with $230,314 in Ben Franklin Technology Development Authority money to develop and manufacture hydrogen fuel-cell electrodes. The new electrodes will use carbon nanotubes for improved performance and longevity, thereby reducing overall costs for fuel-cell operations. Cleveland-based HydroGen is contributing $131,545 to the project. Carbon nanotubes are large molecules of pure carbon that are long and thin and shaped like tubes. The nanotubes are 100 times stronger than steel and one-sixth its weight. Nanotubes can be extremely efficient electricity and heat conductors, and some act as semiconductors. The new electrodes will be made at HydroGen's manufacturing facility in Versailles. The company has entered into a partnership with the University of Pittsburgh to assess the use of commercially available carbon nanotubes for fuel-cell electrode catalysts. The NanoMaterials Commercialization Center-funded project is expected to allow HydroGen to make an improved fuel-cell electrode, and expand its fuel-cell business worldwide. Funding a skate park, one Web search at a time. Search software and services provider Vivisimo is partnering with Bethlehem to help the Northampton County city pay for a new skate park and substantially improve its Web-searching capabilities. Under the agreement, for every 1,000 searches that computer users make via Bethlehem's new Vivisimo-designed search engine site, www.Bethlehem.clusty.com, the city will generate about $12 toward the skate park project. Bethlehem is believed to be the first city in the nation to leverage Web site searches as a funding alternative to supplement federal and state resources for an urban project. This isn't the first time Squirrel Hill-based Vivisimo has partnered with a governmental entity. The company paired with the federal government at gov.clusty.com for political and government-related information searches. Vivisimo also provides search capabilities for the city of Pittsburgh and for New Zealand's State Services Commission. It also is the official United States government portal, at www.USA.gov. Honor for Ansys Ansys Inc. said this week it was included on Software Magazine's 2007 Software 500 ranking of the world's largest software and service providers. The Canonsburg-based simulation and product development software company ranked 122 internationally in its first appearance on the list.
