OAKMONT-- Police, firefighters and an Air Search and Rescue helicopter searched the Allegheny River around the Hulton Bridge on Thursday after receiving reports that a man threatened to jump to his death.
The man, believed to be in his early 20s and formerly of Verona, never jumped or said what bridge he was on -- or whether he was on a bridge at all, according to Oakmont Police Chief Robert Moyer.
About 11 a.m., someone saw the man and a woman arguing on the Hulton Bridge, Moyer said.
About 30 minutes later, the man's mother called 911 and reported that the woman told her that he was threatening suicide by jumping into the water, but he wouldn't say where he was, according to Tarentum dispatch.
"He had said on the phone that he was high on something elevated and would jump," Moyer said. "A bridge comes to mind when you talk that way."
By 1 p.m., the man's mother called 911 and reported that he was at a restaurant and would get a ride to Braddock Hospital. The mother reported that her son wouldn't tell her what restaurant he was at.
Moyer said he doesn't believe any crimes were committed. Moyer said there was no evidence that he threatened the woman.
"If he needs help, we're willing to help," Moyer said. "We're trying to help; he just didn't want our help."
