Voting rights & wrongs
I can only hope those who oppose my moral principles agree with Donald Boudreaux, an economist who chooses not to vote because “it makes little sense” (” To vote or not to vote ,” Feb. 27 and PghTrib.com).
Mr. Boudreaux states that voting won’t let your “voice be heard” and that no one vote will swing an election. He then points out that one way to get his voice heard is by buying Brand X rather than Brand Y (or by buying neither).
Economically, his purchases alone won’t make or break a manufacturer, but purchases by a larger number of consumers could make an impact. (Thus, at times groups call for a boycott of a company’s product to make a point.)
Isn’t it clear that the same works with voting?
Boudreaux is correct in that one person doesn’t make a difference in the vote. That one person, along with hundreds or thousands of like-minded individuals, does make a difference, though.
It’s only those who are like-minded with Boudreaux who will make no difference in who leads our government.
