Seven water main breaks wreaked havoc on roads and water supplies in Avalon on Saturday, fire officials said.

“I've been here 32 years, and I've never seen that many breaks at one time,” said Avalon Volunteer Fire Department Chief William Carney.

The breaks shut down roads including Center at Chestnut, Orchard at Chestnut and Howden Street, according to Allegheny County officials.

Fire Capt. Steven Johnson said it's unclear what caused the breaks.

“It's rare we get one,” he said.

The number of affected customers was not available. Officials at West View Water Authority, which serves Avalon and 31 other municipalities, could not be reached.

The borough set up a water buffalo at the fire department for affected residents.
