Eight of the nine happiest Australian regions are the poorest and most rural communities and the most wealthy and metropolitan are the most miserable.

A study by Deakin University indexed the 150 electorates in Australia in areas like standard of living, sense of safety, connection to community as well as economic measures.

The Australian reports the coastal, bush electorate of Wide Bay, in Queensland, is where the citizens most happy with their lives live.

Sydney, Australia's wealthiest city, also leads in upset residents.

Transport Minister and Wide Bay member of Parliament Warren Truss said it "shows you don't need to be rich to be happy."
