West Mifflin is preparing for its last holiday lighting ceremony at the municipal building across Lebanon Church Road from Allegheny County Airport.

At Tuesday's council meeting, Mayor Chris Kelly detailed plans for the event on Dec. 5 at 6 p.m., which will feature Mr. and Mrs. Santa Claus and performances.

Those performing include the Holy Spirit Church choir and the West Mifflin Area High School show choir and brass ensemble, as well as ABC and Tiffany Sopp dance studios. The high school's TLC club will provide face painting.

Best Buy will take a photo of each child with Santa and Mrs. Claus.

There were 300 children in attendance last year.

Recreation director Steve Keron said the borough budgeted $750 for the event, including the purchase of pizza and refreshments.

By the time the holidays roll around next year, West Mifflin's municipal government expects to be in new quarters. By February the borough hopes to be moved into the former Trumbull Corp. headquarters along Lebanon Road.

Councilman Steve Marone touted an upcoming event to raise money to help a volunteer firefighter battle cancer.

A spaghetti dinner is slated on Dec. 14 from 1-7 p.m. at the Skyview No. 4 Volunteer Fire Co. hall, 660 Noble Road, to benefit the William “Billy” Proud Beat Cancer Fund.

Marone said Proud, 25, is a third-generation volunteer firefighter battling a rare incurable form of Hodgkin's Lymphoma.

Fliers handed out at the council meeting said it's all you can eat of spaghetti, salad, rolls and dessert for $8. A Chinese auction basket and 50/50 raffles are slated.

In other action, council approved a $1,000 donation in care of Southern Command for the Pennsylvania Special Olympics.
