State police charged the superintendent of West Mifflin Area School District with drunken driving this week following a traffic stop in Beaver County.

State police pulled over Daniel Robert Castagna, 41, for speeding and careless driving last Friday in Center, court records show.

Charges filed Tuesday against Castagna include two counts of driving under the influence, speeding and careless driving.

Court records did not list an attorney for Castagna. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Oct. 27.

"The district takes these allegations seriously," Solicitor Matthew Racunas said in a statement to Tribune-Review news partner WPXI-TV. "However, the law requires that Dr. Castagna be provided with due process. Currently, there are no convictions relating to any offense. The district will continue to closely monitor the situation as it proceeds through the court system going forward."

Racunas declined further comment.

Castagna isn't the only West Mifflin school employee facing troublesome accusations this week.

The district said Wednesday that it placed an assistant coach on administrative leave over accusations of inappropriate contact with a student. District officials notified West Mifflin police, who are conducting a separate probe.
