Chris Mucci hit a grand slam, as West Point pounded Latrobe, 14-4, on Thursday in the opener of the best-of-three District 26 11-year-old championship series.
Game 2 is 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Latrobe.
West Point softball set for title game
The West Point 10U softball team will play for the District 26 championship at 6 p.m. Monday against the winner of Saturday’s Latrobe/Kiski Valley game.
West Point advanced to the title game with a 3-1 victory against Latrobe on Wednesday.
Winning pitcher Morgan Ryan struck out nine and allowed only two hits.
Micaela Zoppetti drove in two runs with a single, and Marissa LaVella added a single for West Point.
Amber Dreistadt singled and scored Latrobe’s only run.
Local gymnastics team wins state title
The Westmoreland Gymnastic Highlanders Advance Prep team continued its recent string of excellence, winning its first state championship and its first since 1999 in the all-around competition.
The team competed at the State Prep Optional meet last month in Hatboro and also earned several victories in individual events.
In the Novice Division, Crashaunda Goins of North Huntingdon took first place in the beam, vault and all-around.
The Advance Prep Division featured first-place finishes in bar, beam and vault by Harrison City’s Nicole Peduzzi. In the same division, Aliana Peduzzi, Nicole’s cousin, placed first in the floor competition, and Chelsea Price took first in the floor exercise.
Also, Cassiday Shepherd placed first in the vault, bars and all-around in the 14-and-older division of the Advance Prep Division.
