INDUSTRY — After tying the game with 19 seconds left in regulation, Springdale dropped a 34-26 overtime decision Saturday afternoon to Western Beaver at Rich Niedbala Field.
Trailing 26-20 late in the fourth quarter, Springdale quarterback Brian Shemanski fired a pass on a slant pattern to senior Greg Arch, whose momentum carried him into the end zone for a 13-yard score.
Instead of lining up for an extra-point attempt, the Dynamos decided to try for a two-point conversion. On the attempt, Billy Arch was submarined by safety Zach Cavalier at the 10.
The decision to try a two-pointer stemmed from an earlier touchdown by Springdale (0-2) with 7:45 to go in the fourth period, when Greg Arch hauled in an 8-yard touchdown pass from Shemanski. Given a chance to try two extra-point kicks because of a Western Beaver penalty, Springdale kicker Jacob Kuczynski had both attempts blocked.
On the second try with the ball at inside the 2-yard-line, Western Beaver left defensive end Kyle Stadnik broke through for the block to keep the score tied at 20-20.
“We went for two because we had problems there with the previous kick,” Springdale coach Chuck Wagner said. “He’s a soccer player coming over, and we didn’t want to put extra pressure on him. When you go 0 for 2 like we did there, we thought it would be best if we tried to put it in there from the line of scrimmage.”
“I’m sure they were worried about those previous blocks,” Western Beaver coach Matt Gray said. “They had a lot of success moving the ball, and I’m sure they thought, ‘Hey, we got a play here where we can get two or three yards.’ ”
In the overtime period, the Golden Beavers started with a 4-yard gain by Cavalier, but a facemask penalty against Springdale placed the ball inside the 3. Cavalier scored on the following play. Morgan Rice, on a two-point conversion try, twisted away from two Dynamos tacklers at the goal line to put Western Beaver (1-1) in front to stay.
In the Springdale possession, a pass into the end zone was batted down by Dustin Creel to end the game.
Springdale played the final eight minutes of the fourth quarter and the overtime without key running back/safety Adam Shepherd, who suffered a dislocated shoulder while returning a kickoff.
Western Beaver’s top player, Hunter Creel, did not dress due to an illness.
The Golden Beavers staged four solid offensive drives during regulation play. The Golden Beavers rushed for 289 yards overall against Springdale’s usually solid defense.
“We’ve got to get our defense squared away,” Wagner said. “We had a real tough day, defensively. I believe we can get those things squared away this (coming) week.”
The Dynamos scored first-half touchdowns by Shemanski on a 1-yard keeper and Sean Kutchko on a 2-yard run.
Springdale will open Eastern Conference play Friday at home against newcomer North Catholic, 2-0 and the No. 4-ranked team in the Trib Total Media rankings.
