Westmoreland Bar Association honored

The Westmoreland Bar Association received recognition awards during the annual seminar of the Conference of County Bar Leaders in Harrisburg.

Recognized for its children's book drive, Chamber bash and updated newsletter design, the Westmoreland Bar Association was one of 28 county bar associations honored for sponsoring projects that work to improve the legal profession, justice system or community.


Penn-Trafford School District students were among the winners in a Westmoreland County academic competition.

The team of Brian Coupland, Gregory Witt, Joshua Ciocco, Thomas Ciocco and Katy Gongaware took a first place at 'World Events: The American Revolution,' held in March at Greensburg Salem Middle School.

Joshua Ciocco also took a individual first, and Witt captured a second.

The competition required students to answer topical questions by wagering and then substantiating answers with reference materials. In addition, current events questions were asked, but students were not permitted to use any reference materials.

The students are part of the school district's gifted program and attend either Trafford or Penn middle schools.


Lee Kunkle, South Greensburg's borough secretary, has been reappointed to the borough's recreation board. Kunkle, who is the board's treasurer, has served on the recreation board for 17 years.


Debbie Reese of Chestnut Hill, Greensburg, has been appointed to the Greensburg Aerobic Center Authority for a one-year term. Greensburg Council appointed Reese to replace Diana Lesnock, who resigned on April 3. Reese's term expires on March 8, 2002.


The following students have been awarded academic and leadership scholarships to St. Vincent College near Latrobe:

Arthur Carney and Molly Haas of Derry; Michelle Fonzi of Export; Anthony Louis Santia, Ryan Silvis, Benjamin Wentzel and Melissa Burns of Greensburg; Ashley Andrykovitch and Natalie Vidnovic of Irwin; Matthew Krisnosky, Matthew Allen and David William McDevitt of Jeannette; Cara Hauser, Adam Baker, Matthew David Burkardt, Ellen Bursch, Megan Roble and Rebecca Miller of Latrobe; Angeline Landy and Melissa Picarsic of Acme: Kristina Mei of Delmont; Jessica Wray Hout of Mt. Pleasant;

Jerrod Pietrala and Janice Sheffler of New Alexandria; Steven Derr of West Newton; Amy Morrison of Scottdale; and Justin Rothrauff of North Huntingdon Township.


Nathan Moore, a Penn-Trafford School District senior, won a first place in a statewide competition.

Moore earned top honors in Technology Concepts at the Future Business Leaders of America state conference held in April at Seven Springs Mountain Resort in Champion. Approximately 2,000 students took part in the conference.

Five other Penn-Trafford students finished within the top 10.

Laurie Liss and Cindy Weir earned a ninth place in the Desktop Publishing team event.

Tenth-place awards were garnered by Jake Curran, Word Processing II; Michelle DeRosa, Business Procedures; and Eric Moore, International Business.

The school's FBLA sponsors are Carol Palmer and Marty Corna.


Holly Hantz of Latrobe and Elizabeth Bucci of Derry were named first and second alternates, respectively, in a scholarship competition sponsored by the Timkin Co. Educational Fund. Each will receive $2,500.

Hantz is a student at Greater Latrobe High School and Bucci is a student at Derry Area High School.


Jamie Cobb of Greensburg and Heather Rupp of Mt. Pleasant were named to Kappa Delta Pi, an international honor society in education at Clarion University.

Cobb, a junior elementary education/special education major, is the daughter of James and Deborah Cobb Jr. Rupp is a graduate student in communication and speech disorders.


Shannon Barnett of Latrobe and Patrick Fitzgerald of Greensburg were named to the Alpha Lambda Delta honor society at Susquehanna University.

Barnett, a freshman music and math major, is a 2000 graduate of Greater Latrobe Senior High School. She is the daughter of Jim and Ginny Barnett.

Fitzgerald, a freshman accounting major, is a 2000 graduate of Greensburg Salem High School. He is the son of Ronald and Diana Fitzgerald.


Krista Bartolomucci of Greensburg has received Duquesne University's annual Golden Key National Honor Society undergraduate scholarship.

Bartolomucci graduated in May with a degree in communications and a minor in business administration. She will attend graduate school at Duquesne in August.


Jennifer Rock of Greensburg was initiated into Psi Chi honor society at Susquehanna University. Rock, a senior theater arts major, is a 1997 graduate of Greensburg Central Catholic High School. She is the daughter of John and Rebecca Rock.


Neely Pessin of Greensburg has been named a United States Award winner in English by the United States Achievement Academy. Pessin is a student at Greensburg Salem High School.


Holly Czuba, formerly of Greensburg, was inducted into Mercersburg Academy's Cum Laude Society, which recognizes scholastic achievement. Czuba is the daughter of Dr. Michael T. Czuba of Elizabeth City, N.C.


The Westmoreland Bar Association elected John Campfield president at the association's annual membership meeting. Campfield, a partner with Campfield & Ferraro in Greensburg, is a graduate of Duquesne University. Other elected officers include: Timothy Geary of Vandergrift, president-elect; Aaron Kress of New Kensington, vice-chair; Milt Munk Jr. of Mt. Pleasant, treasurer; and Diane Krivoniak of Latrobe, secretary.

Also, Jacquelyn Knupp, a partner with the law firm Millstein and Knupp in Youngwood, was recognized by the association as the Outstanding Young Lawyer of 2001. Knupp has been a member of the Westmoreland Bar since 1996. A graduate of Seton Hill College and the University of Pittsburgh School of Law, Knupp and her husband, Brian, and their children, Paige and Paxton, live in Ligonier.

Bruce Tobin, a sole practitioner in Greensburg, was selected for the Pro Bono Attorney of the Year award. Tobin has served as a pro bono volunteer since the inception of the program in 1991.

Tobin, a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh School of Law, resides in Greensburg with his wife, Kathy, and their son, Colin.


Bruce Bach of Smithton and Lance Holton of North Huntingdon Township have begun training at the Pittsburgh Institute of Aeronautics in Pittsburgh. Each will receive an associate's degree in specialized technology.


Lindsay Thomas of Latrobe received a $7,500 scholarship in the national Junior Girls Scholarship Competition. Thomas, a junior at Greater Latrobe Senior High School, was sponsored by the Pleasant Unity Memorial Auxiliary No. 8643.


Nick Judy of Irwin received the Eberly Family Honors Scholarship at Edinboro University of Pennsylvania. Judy, the son of Ron and Pam Judy, is a computer science major.


Dana Luccy of Greensburg was named to the dean's list for the winter semester at Rochester Institute of Technology in New York. Luccy, a graphic design major, is a 1999 graduate of Greensburg Central Catholic High School.


Ryan Faught of Murrysville, a sophomore at Franklin Regional High School, will participate in the National Youth Leadership Forum conference this July in Washington, D.C. Faught is a member of the student council, plays on the hockey team and serves as a staff member of the student newspaper.


Sara Sibenaller of Greensburg received the Natalie J. Dwrite Scholarship Award for outstanding leadership and contributions to the Greensburg YMCA swim team.

A student at Greensburg Central Catholic, Sibenaller has qualified for the WPIAL swimming championships for three years. She is an honor student and a member of the Spanish Honor Society, art club and concert band.


Beth Anne Buchheit of Greensburg served as a student marshal for Penn State University's nutrition department during the College of Health and Human Development's commencement ceremonies. Buchheit, a nutrition major, is a 1997 graduate of Greensburg Salem High School. She is the daughter of Larry and Nadine Buchheit of Greensburg.
