Westmoreland Community Action Wine Tasting held at courthouse

Four floors of the Westmoreland County courthouse were open Friday for the 10th annual Westmoreland Community Action Wine Tasting. The only restriction was that food or drink wasn't permitted in the courtrooms.

Westmoreland Museum of American Art, the usual venue for the wine tasting, is under construction. Guests had to pass through courthouse metal detectors, but it was a spacious and fun place for a party, WCA executive director Tay Waltenbaugh said. "I think this is the most beautiful courthouse in Pennsylvania."

Wine favorites: the sangria by Sybarite, the riesling by Greenhouse Winery, the honey wine by Laurel Highlands Meadery and Christian W. Klay Winery's Washington Tavern Red.

Starbucks provided the coffee, and savories and sweets were from One Tuff Cookie, Pepperwood Grille, Steel Penny Cakes, Mama G's Diner, The Chocolate Shoppe, Szechuan Garden, Sophistications and Baby Cakes.

WCA is looking forward to the April 28 grand opening of the Shop Demo Depot in Mount Pleasant.

Shop Demo Depot will be managed by and benefit WCA, as well as its partners, Fayette County Community Action and Community Action Southwest, in Washington and Greene counties. Shop Demo Depot accepts tax-deductible donations of surplus and reusable building materials, hardware, landscape materials, appliances, windows, flooring, bath fixtures and lighting. The store will be open to the public.

Seen: Westmoreland Chamber president Chad Amond, Commissioner Ted Kopas and April, Casey and Cheri Cavanaugh, Karen Brinker, Patti Buhl, Amy Grubb, Dr. Jason Cinti and Jen Miele, Laurie Barnett Levine, Cindy Bahn and Lisa Hoffman, and the crew from S&T Bank: Debbie Marquis, Judy Soles, Darcee Purvis, Lisa Smartnick, Diana Sackett and Kelly Osenkowski.

Garden Center Tea

"There is no trouble so great or grave that cannot be much diminished by a nice cup of tea." So said philosopher Bernard-Paul Heroux, as quoted in the program of Saturday's Cherry Blossom Tea at the Greensburg Garden Center.

Similarly, a nice cup of tea can make an already pleasant day just that much better, as about 90 tea guests probably would agree.

The tables were decorated in fanciful and colorful themes, sporting such adornments as pastel balloons and cupcakes; a waterfall of red blossoms; antique china and miniature roses; a mini-Eiffel Tower, cut crystal and pink champagne; and, yes, a spray of delicately hued cherry blossoms.

Event chairwomen were Diane Dale and Donna Lee, assisted by greeter Jane Petrovich.

Pianist Alan Lomicka and Stage Right performers entertained.

Seen sipping: Lougene Whiteman, Louise Muse, Jeanne Cook, Carrie Pike, Sandra Matesic, Audrey Novak, Angela Raitano, Denise Skilone, Lori Ann Chaussinard, Linda Ralph, Joanna Barnhart, Barbara Iwaniec, Mary Pfeifer and Lynn Boschert.

Also, Joan Nickoloff, Bonnie Humberger, Loraine Cochenour, Lisa Eicher, Wendy Slater, Jean Streeter, Pat Schork, Debbie Rusnock, Bridget Kitch, Veronica Buczak, Celine Steinmiller, Carol Nath and Geneva Markle, the longest-tenured member of the garden center.
