Westmoreland Fair continues through Saturday

The 48th annual Westmoreland County Fair continues through Saturday at the fairgrounds in Mount Pleasant Township.

At 5:30 p.m. tonight the 4-H benefit auction will be held in the small arena, and the 4-H shotgun and riflery competition is planned for 6 p.m.

The Povertyneck Hillbillies will perform at 7 and 9 p.m. in the Key 95 Show Arena. The Skid Loader Rodeo Contest and garden tractor pull will be held at 7:30 p.m. in the Rolling Rock Arena. Admission to these events is free.

On Friday, several 4-H and open competitions will be judged, including the dairy cattle, junior livestock, supreme dairy animal and supreme showmanship, as well as the 4-H Dog Show and the animal dressing contest.

Saturday is Pepsi Day with a $7.95 ride matinee from 1 to 4 p.m. 4-H and FFA members will be admitted free until 7 p.m.

The junior livestock sale will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday in the small arena. At noon, the Pedal Power Pull is planned for kids under 10 and women of all ages.

At 7:30 p.m., the championship demolition derby will be held in the Rolling Rock Arena. Admission is $6 for adults and $3 for kids ages 2 to 12.

Also at 7:30 p.m., the Prairie Fire Country Band will perform at the Sit-A-Spell stage and the Bell School of Irish Dancers will perform at the Key 95 Show Arena. Admission to both events is free.

  • Self Help for Hard of Hearing (SHHH) meets at 7 p.m. tonight at Frick Hospital. The group meets the fourth Thursday of each month. Please call 724-547-1668 to register.

  • The Regional Family YMCA of Laurel Highlands' Family Night Out is planned from 6 to 11 p.m. tomorrow at the Scottdale Children's Center. The event, held the second and fourth Friday of each month provides a fun-filled night for kids ages 6 to 12 under the supervision of the YMCA's childcare program staff. The cost is $10 per child and reservations must be made at least 24 hours in advance. Call 724-887-3145.

  • Mount Pleasant's summer music program continues 6 p.m. Sunday at the gazebo with a performance by Lil' John's Band. A concert by Back in Time is scheduled for Sept. 15.

  • The associates of Standard Bank are selling 2002- 2003 entertainment books to raise money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Western Pennsylvania. The entertainment books, which contain discount and value-aided coupons to many area attractions, restaurants and grocery stores, will be available through Oct. 30.

  • Frick Hospital is sponsoring an American Red Cross Bloodmobile from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.. on Monday in the hospital's fourth floor conference rooms. Those who have not donated blood in the past 56 days are encouraged to attend. The American Red Cross stresses that summer is usually a time of blood shortages, but this year, supplies have been critically low. Just one donation of a pint of blood can help up to four people.

  • The Mount Pleasant Food Pantry distribution will be held from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday at Central Fire Station. For more information call 724-423-7044 (Norvelt EMS).

  • The Mount Pleasant Senior Citizens Center has planned a spaghetti dinner from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Wednesday at the senior center on Washington Street.

    Dinner includes spaghetti and meatballs, salad, bread, dessert and a beverage. Entertainment begins after 6:30 p.m. The cost is $5 for adults and $2.50 for kids 12 and under. Tickets can be purchased at the center from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on weekdays, set aside by calling 724-547-4593, or purchased at the door.

  • The farmer's market, sponsored by the Mount Pleasant Business District Authority, will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. each Wednesday through October on the Diamond at the intersection of Routes 31 and 819.

    Shoppers will find a variety of items for sale including fresh produce, baked goods, handcrafted furniture and other items, and beverages. New vendors are always welcome. Call 724-547-7521.

  • Congratulations to this month's Volunteers of the Month Nick Etze and Nellie Arrotti who have contributed much to Mount Pleasant, including devoting over 60 years to helping the volunteer fire department.

    Nominations for Mount Pleasant's Volunteer of the month may be submitted in writing to the borough secretary. Council selects a new volunteer to be honored with the title each month.
