Greensburg man gets jail time for strangling girlfriend
A Greensburg man will serve up to 23 months in jail for an attack against his girlfriend last year.
James Oliver Vickers, 32, on Thursday pleaded guilty to strangulation during an July 20, 2017, incident at Linn Run State Park in Cook Township.
Police said Vickers and his victim argued about her alcohol consumption when he used a cellphone to pretend to record her behavior. Vickers became violent when the woman knocked the phone away and it broke on the ground, according to police.
Investigators said an enraged Vickers put both hands to the woman’s neck an applied pressure until she lost consciousnesses. He repeated the attack after she awoke, police said. The woman eventually fled to another cabin in the park and called for help, according to court records.
Westmoreland County Common Pleas Court Judge Meagan Bilik-DeFazio sentenced Vickers to serve 6 to 23 months in jail and an additional two years on probation. The sentence was below standard guidelines at the request of the victim, according to records.
