Logos embodying Jeannette presented to council

Several logos of varying shapes and styles were presented to Jeannette council members Monday for consideration as part of the town’s new look.

A team of professionals and community leaders who were tapped to formulate a slogan for the city will make a recommendation to council as to which logo might best represent Jeannette’s identity and its potential path, said Elaine Kramer, landscape designer and planner with Pashek Associates, which is developing a comprehensive plan for the city

“I want to ask the professionals what their preference is,” Kramer told council Monday. “I’m glad that you like the direction we’re going in.”

A piece of the comprehensive plan is creating a brand for Jeannette, in addition to addressing the city’s struggling downtown, blighted properties, unappealing entrances and negative perception. A slogan has been created — Community, Commerce, Culture — and those words were paired with the city name to create several options for a logo. Some of the designs include a city skyline and railroad tracks, while others had cursive lettering and bright colors. The slogan — a “quick shorthand identifier for the city” — is meant to put Jeannette in the best light while leaving room for aspirations, Kramer said.

“We wanted nothing flippant,” she said. “We wanted nothing frivolous. We wanted to reflect the solidity of the community.”

The logo eventually could end up on Jeannette’s website and on employee business cards and stationery and possibly even in more visible parts of the community.

The slogan and logo were the result of a brainstorming session with about 10 marketing and communication experts as well as community and business leaders.

Councilwoman Robin Mozley said she liked that many different groups and professions were represented during that session.

Mayor Richard Jacobelli said the hard part will be living up to the slogan and getting citizens on board.

“I like everything, but it’s people from the inside we have to convince,” he said.

The comprehensive plan process has been ongoing for more than a year. Citizens have had input, and Pashek Associates is creating the document that could guide Jeannette through ways to revitalize the community of 9,300.

The plan is estimated to cost about $98,000, with the state picking up much of the tab. The city will put $5,000 of a Community Development Block Grant toward the cost.
