Program to explore H.C. Frick and coal mine strikes
Henry Clay Frick’s early coal mines, the miners who worked for him and the violent labor strikes of 1891 and 1894 in the Mt. Pleasant and Scottdale areas will be discussed in a program at 3 p.m. Sept. 22 at the Connellsville Canteen, 131 W. Crawford Ave., Connellsvile.
Local historian Cassandra Vivian of Mt. Pleasant will lead the discussion about the Morewood Massacre, which was part of the strike of 1891 and the strike of 1894, which caused the death of J. H. Paddock, Frick’s chief engineer. The Pinkertons were called in to protect property. and the coal and iron police were to restore order.
Those with photos, ledgers or other items related are asked to bring those items to the program.
