Unity begins work to replace torched garage

Construction is underway to replace a Unity Township public works garage destroyed in a 2017 arson. A new $2.4 million structure will be built on the same footprint. General contractor Walter Mucci Construction, of Perryopolis, this week began preparing the ground for footers and pylons.

The township supervisors Thursday agreed to replace two pieces of equipment lost in the fire. They are purchasing a used Case backhoe for $28,500 and authorized lease-purchase financing of a 2019 International street sweeper, not to exceed yearly payments of $59,000 over five years.

The costs will be submitted for coverage by township insurer Cincinnati Insurance, which has offered a reward of up to $10,000 for information leading to a conviction in the arson.

Residents who drop off used Christmas trees for recycling at the township site on Beatty County Road were cautioned to be aware of construction vehicles also entering the property for work on the garage. Trees, with ornaments removed, will be accepted 8-4 weekdays, Jan. 2-31.
