What’s new at PNC Park for opening day

Pirates CEO Kevin McClatchy said it’s not enough that PNC Park is widely recognized as one of the top ballparks in the country.

“It’s one thing to be called the best ballpark in America, but you have to keep it the best ballpark in America,” McClatchy said Thursday during a media tour designed to show off the park’s new main scoreboard.

“We went out and got a new scoreboard which everyone will see,” he said. “We’ve made some changes to keep it fresh and make sure it continues to be the best ballpark in America.” The new main scoreboard has twice the video display power of the previous one, by splitting the display area into multiple windows.

The new scoreboard can focus all of its 160 percent greater size and resolution power on a single game highlight, animation or video clip. Or the 35 by 82 foot Daktronics video display screen can be split to include windows for lineup information, statistics and out of town scores. “I think our fans will see the difference when they come here on opening day,” McClatchy said.

The Pirates will show off the new scoreboard against the St. Louis Cardinals in the home opener at 1:35 p.m. on Monday.

The old scoreboard was disassembled and reconfigured to form a ribbon LED (light emitting diode) video display which spans the upper deck. It will include information on pitch counts, which Pirates fans have requested for several seasons.

New souvenir items include red Pirates jerseys, and an expanded line of women’s clothing, which follows a fashion trend across the majors according to Aramark general manager Steve Musciano.

Musciano said there will be no increase in food prices this season, but the menu has been expanded to include:

  • Crab cakes with remoulade sauce served on a platter with cole slaw and potato chips for $10.50. Beef brisket sandwiches also will be available at two new food action stations.

  • Bucco Taco served in a cup for $5.25. This version of the walking taco includes corn chips, chili, cheese, tomatoes, sour cream and green onions. The walking taco became a hit at high school football games around the region in recent years.

  • Non-alcoholic frozen fruit drinks for $3.75, or by the yard in a souvenir cup for $6.50. Ice cream also can be added to the North Shore Ice Company drinks.

      Starbucks coffee and pizza by the slice also will be available for the first time.

      “The ballpark is beautiful, but we’ve got a lot of good stuff inside,” McClatchy said.
