Dan Wheldon celebrated his 30th birthday by winning the Iowa Corn Indy 250 on Sunday — his second victory of the season. Wheldon took the lead out of a caution flag with 60 laps to go after making the risky decision not to pit. The move paid off, as Wheldon held off Hideki Mutoh and Marco Andretti down the stretch. Wheldon’s win gave Pittsburgh native Chip Ganassi five victories in nine IRL races this season. • Felipe Massa of Ferrari won the French Grand Prix and moved top of the overall standings after his third F1 victory of the season. Massa overtook teammate and pole sitter Kimi Raikkonen with 32 laps to go and held on to win by 17.9 seconds. • A day after Funny Car driver Scott Kalitta was killed in a qualifying accident, five-time world champion Tony Schumacher raced to his first Top Fuel win in 12 tries at the Lucas Oil NHRA SuperNationals. • Just two months ago, car owner Rick Hendrick sounded almost certain Casey Mears would be driving his No. 5 Chevrolet next season. Now, he doesn’t sound so sure. Asked before yesterday’s Sprint Cup race at Infineon Raceway if he was committed to Mears through for the full length of his contract, Hendrick avoided the question. • NASCAR warned the drivers before yesterday’s Sprint Cup race not to pass the pace car during the caution period, an offense Dale Earnhardt Jr. did several times in last week’s victory at Michigan.
