When friends of Nancy Prince Thomas were looking for someone with whom to share secrets, they turned to her mother, Elizabeth "Betty" Prince.

The wife of late Pirates broadcaster Bob Prince relished the job of listening to them.

"Mom was the one all my friends went to. She was a tremendous listener and a loyal confidante," her daughter said.

Elizabeth "Betty" Prince, 91, of Upper St. Clair died Wednesday, Dec. 26, 2007, at Friendship Village in Upper St. Clair.

A 1938 graduate of Grove City College, Mrs. Prince "loved her church, loved her college," her daughter said.

Mrs. Prince taught business and business law at Zelienople High School before marrying. She was president of the alumni council and was an alumni trustee of Grove City College. She was a board member for more than 40 years at Presbyterian Senior Care Homes in Oakmont and Washington, and was an active member of Westminster Presbyterian Church since 1960.

"She was a very good Christian woman, a kind and compassionate woman and a loyal friend," said Thomas, of South Fayette.

Mrs. Prince, an avid reader who loved to do needlepoint, was shy, her daughter said.

She worked with her late husband to create a warm and welcoming home. "Their home was their haven," Thomas said.

Bob Prince died June 10, 1985.

Mrs. Price was a fighter, battling against the odds to come back from a stroke on May 4, 2004, her daughter said.

"She was not expected to live ... but she fought like crazy," Thomas said. "She was a gift to my brother and me."

In addition to her daughter, Mrs. Prince is survived by a son, Robert Ferris Prince Jr. of Venice, Fla.; and several grandchildren.

There will be no visitation. A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 5, in Westminster Presbyterian Church, 2040 Washington Road, Upper St. Clair. Interment will be private.
