The Chinese are engaged in cyber chicanery. Really?!
Russia isn’t much of a democracy. Gee, who woulda thunk it?!
The Saudis want the Iranian leadership decapitated⢠Get outta town!
These are among the “revelations” in the latest document dump of United States “secrets” by Julian Assange’s WikiLeaks organization.
And while there are tens of thousands more tidbits that range from the merely embarrassing, to potentially troublesome for diplomacy’s cause, to bona fide national security endangerment, Official Washington faces its own indictment.
It’s shockingly apparent that America’s classified information security apparatus is in dire need of an upgrade. That a disgruntled Army private is said to be the source of this and a prior breach is all the confirmation one needs.
And the “rationale” that the breach is a result of efforts to promote better inter-agency intelligence sharing is bogus. Sloppy security is sloppy security. And because of that, diplomats will be more inclined to clam up than share their much-needed unvarnished impressions with their bosses.
As for Mr. Assange, he should consider himself lucky that he chose the U.S. as his target. Had so many other countries been in his cross hairs, he’d be a dead man by now.
